On the weekend of Halloween, I went on a pleasant weekend getaway with some friends and family. Great way to spend a few days out of the heat of Phoenix.
Thankfully I have a lovely sister in law who also loves books that was willing to indulge in a quick stop at a used bookstore in Show Low, AZ. Books and Treasures.
What a treasure!
Lovely place, basement shop on one of the main roads with lovely overstuffed chairs, nooks and crannies to sit in, and shelves going rooms and rooms deep up from the back to the street.
ALSO a writers' group I know of had their collection featured up by the front desk with self-published work right there for anybody to see! Does the heart good, I have to say.
While my SIL headed to the sci fi fantasy section while I jogged down to the nonfiction like the knowledge gremlin I am. I found a cabinet with some lovely selections on regional and state lore. I took some time to Google titles and came out with Lore and Legend: Adventure and History in the White Mountains of Arizona by JoAnn F. Hatch.
We left, me with one and some tasty local honey sticks and my SIL with an armful of tasteful older fantasy. But the next day we brought the rest of the group.
We all got in a proper browse. Unfortunately, my brother's enthusiasm was sadly lacking compared to mine. Vintage engineering manuals didn't do it for him, and I had to work very hard not to drool over some writing reference from back in the 30s.
I was really tempted by this one: Book of the Black Bass. 1881. But I know I wouldn't appreciate it. Yet.
I did bring along these gems. I am absurdly psyched.
