Some years ago, but nowhere near at the start of the phenomenon, I found and started listening to Welcome to Nightvale. I admit fiction is a difficult thing for me - college sucked a lot of the fun out of fiction for me and has made me extremely picky about how I spend my fiction tokens. But I fell in love almost immediately. Like so many of the other millions of listeners.
I listened to the entire backlog in a matter of months of commutes.
Around the same time, I befriended one of my coworkers. She was new and I was determined to just let my freak flag fly this time. She took a look at me and somehow decided I was friend shaped.
Like a lot of neurodivergent folks, I express affection in … different ways. I've recently heard of "penguin pebbling", and I absolutely do this. With recommendations.
I recommended Nightvale to her several times, and when the time was right and she gave it a try it stuck really well!
It feels meaningful to share a fandom with someone, regardless of the level of investment in it. Welcome to Nightvale has a lot of meanings to a lot of people. To me, it represents this friendship that's continued growing for the last two years, past casual office chat, through family distress, illness, and now a pandemic.
Weirdness is nourishment for great friendships.
