Angles of Art History and Podcasts

Seems I'm not the only one with some interest in breaking down the divide between enjoying a nice picture and being "in the know" about a piece of expensive art.

I love podcasts, so I pulled up several on art history. I do so love to see things from a variety of angles and the differences between these different hosts and their approaches are just what I love.

Here are some standouts.

This guy is a foul-mouthed spaz, and he's MY KIND OF SPAZ. Full stars. Where in a lot of ways, art history gets romanticized and made acceptable for the kind of circles that can afford to sit up at auction houses and drop hundreds of thousands if not a few million on a piece, this podcast brings it right back down to earth with a thump and a heaping spoon of sass.

More the kind of thing I thought I'd find when looking for a podcast. Each episode a highlight to a story, so lovely little treats in an easy to digest format.

Like most folks, I thought paint. Maybe sculpture. And more history. But I like this one for modernity and photography and… well, institutional weight. This isn't sensationalized history, more like where things are right now and what people and portraits matter. I haven't gone back into the archives, but I plan to.

This one is charming. I love the smooth lovely voice and the accommodating tone to folks trying to enjoy art. The host interviews regular museum attendees viewing a piece and then delves into the history of the piece, its context, creator, and why it's earned its place. Highly recommend for relaxing listening.
